Sona Speech Therapy

Voice therapy that understands your life

Your voice isn't just sound. It's how you teach, lead, connect, comfort. When voice problems appear, the impact ripples through everything. Sacha has spent 15 years helping adults reclaim their voices. At Austin Health Melbourne, she worked with patients whose livelihoods depended on speaking clearly. At Te Whatu Ora Wellington, she sees the full spectrum: post-surgical recovery, the teacher who hasn't had a pain-free day in months. Voice therapy works. Research shows 40-60% of people with vocal nodules avoid surgery entirely through therapy. But beyond the statistics, it's about you being able to finish a workday without throat pain, to speak without effort, to sound like yourself again. Your story matters. Let's rebuild your voice together.

Is this you?

The teacher running on empty
You've adapted. Speaking softer, avoiding playground duty, dreading assemblies. Your voice gives out by Wednesday. You've been told to 'just rest it' but that's not realistic when you have 30 kids waiting.

The professional who's lost their edge
Presentations used to energise you. Now you avoid speaking up in meetings. Your voice cracks at the worst moments. Colleagues have started asking if you're okay.

The mystery that won't resolve
Hoarse for months. ENT says cords look fine. You've tried everything: rest, honey, humidifiers. Nothing sticks. There's an answer, but nobody's found it yet.

The performer finding their new voice
Gender-affirming voice work, returning after surgery, expanding your range. Your voice is part of your identity, and you're ready to shape it deliberately.

What to Expect

Your therapy journey from assessment to recovery

01

Book your assessment

75 minutes, Wellington clinic or telehealth. No referral needed, though if you've seen an ENT, bring their findings.

02

Tell your story

When did this start? What triggers it? What have you tried? Your voice problem didn't appear in isolation, and understanding context matters.

03

Hear what's happening

Sacha listens to your voice across different tasks: speaking, reading, sustained sounds. She assesses breathing patterns, laryngeal tension, resonance.

04

Try techniques in real-time

Diagnostic therapy: we trial resonant voice, semi-occluded vocal tract exercises, massage techniques. You'll feel what helps before you leave.

05

Leave with a plan

Clear exercises, realistic practice schedule, and a roadmap. Most people need 6-10 sessions over 8-12 weeks. Some see changes within days.

What Our Patients Say

Real experiences from people we've helped

"I'd been hoarse for two years. Three ENTs, countless throat lozenges, nothing worked. Sacha found muscle tension I didn't know I had. Eight sessions later, I can teach all day without pain."

Rebecca

"The telehealth sessions were actually better than I expected. I was in my own space, using my real 'work voice', not my 'trying to be good at the clinic' voice."

Daniel

"After years of feeling like my voice didn't match who I am, I finally found someone who understood what I was trying to achieve. Sacha helped me find a voice that feels like mine."

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our therapy services.

Most people notice something within the first few sessions: a glimmer of their old voice, less effort, less pain. Complete vocal rehab typically takes 6-12 weeks with consistent practice. Teachers often see meaningful improvement within a term. Vocal nodules can take 2-6 months to fully resolve.

No referral required. But if you've had persistent hoarseness for more than 2-3 weeks with no obvious cause (like a cold), it's wise to get your vocal cords visualised. If you haven't, Sacha can discuss whether an ENT visit makes sense and coordinate the referral.

Surprisingly well. Research confirms equivalent outcomes to in-person therapy for most voice disorders. You'll do exercises on camera, Sacha listens carefully to vocal quality changes. Many patients prefer it. You practice in your own environment, no travel time, and your voice is 'real world' rather than clinic-performance.

Voice rest rarely fixes the underlying pattern. If your voice problem is muscle tension dysphonia (and it often is), rest gives temporary relief but the tension returns the moment you start speaking normally. Voice therapy teaches your muscles a different way to work. That's the lasting change.

It's a specific technique: producing strong, clear voice with minimal effort by finding the 'forward focus'. That's the feeling of vibration in your face and lips rather than throat strain. When you find it, speaking feels easy. The goal is making that your default, not something you have to consciously do.

Yes, and Sacha designs around it. She's worked with hundreds of teachers. She knows you can't whisper for two weeks. Therapy focuses on sustainable strategies: warm-ups before class, micro-rests during transitions, techniques that work while you're talking, not instead of talking.

Initial assessment (75 min): $207 in-person Wellington, $167 telehealth. Follow-up sessions (45 min): $157 in-person, $127 telehealth. Most people need 6-10 sessions. We provide detailed invoices for health insurance claims or tax purposes.

Absolutely. Sacha provides gender-affirming voice therapy for pitch, resonance, and communication style. This is skilled work. It's not about performing a voice, it's about finding one that feels authentic to you. Available in-person or telehealth nationwide.
